Budapest Parliament Building

Parliament Building

The capital city of Hungary, Budapest, has countless historical sites worth of visit. However, if you are well organized you can see the top sites within a day by foot. Starting at the magnificent Hungarian Parliament building you continue via Danube Promenade to the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. But before crossing the bridge you can visit the splendid Saint Stephen’s Basilica which contains the mummified fist of the first king of Hungary, Saint Stephen I.

Already at crossing the Széchenyi Chain Bridge you will see your next site, the Buda Castle which is part of the Budapest World Heritage Site. Close to the Buda Castle is the Matthias Church originally built in the early 11th century, while the current building was constructed in the second half of the 14th century. Around the Matthias Church is the Fisherman’s Bastion or Halászbástya which offers a great view over the city.

To reach your last site you can return to Pest where you started your jaunt either to return on the same route or by crossing the Margit híd or Margaret Bridge. From the Margaret Bridge you will see the Margaret Island which mostly covered by landscape parks and is a popular recreational area. Margaret Island can be reached from the Margaret Bridge and is a nice place to relax your feet, however, if you have only one day to visit the most outstanding historical sites it is best if you continue walking until reaching the Heroes’ Square, a memorial with statues of the leaders of the seven tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century and other outstanding figures of Hungarian history.
